Diction & Projection

*Diction is a very important part of an Actors job. This tongue twister can be said to help with diction.

~You should say it slowly at first, making sure you enunciate every part clearly. After you are familiar with it you can speed it up. Speeding it up is the second level of diction "training", making sure you can speak CLEARLY and at a good speed!

I had a Hippopotamus
I kept him in a shed
I fed him up on vitamins (said like vih-tah-mins)
And vegetable bread (said like veg-ah-tah-bull)
Lest he should be affected
By depression or the dumps
By Hippopotameasles
Or Hippopotamumps!

*Projection is also a very important part of an Actors job. You should practice projecting - when and where it will not bother others, PROJECTING IS NOT YELLING. Use your diaphragm the way you would if you were singing. You can use this tongue twister, or your lines. Perhaps you practice in a large room in your house, with someone listening to you on the opposite side of the room, making sure they can hear everything you say - and that it is said clearly.

Remember when you are performing, you want everyone in that very large auditorium to be able to hear you!!!

:o)

A little bit about our production!

L. Frank Baum's book "The Wizard of Oz" has inspired many adaptations, both for the stage and screen. The text for this particular theatrical adaptation is more like Mr. Baum's original novel than the popular film starring Judy Garland. And, unlike the film, this production is not a musical.

Because this story is so well known, and loved, I set myself - as Director - the challenge of making our production an enjoyable, educational, fun filled and unique one! We will work together, cast and crew, to bring you an adventure full of surprises into the land of Oz.

As a little teaser, I will say this, we will be using puppetry, masks and some other stylized surprises in our production.

Let the good times roll!!!

We hope to see you in our audience!!!

~Ms. Hall

Answers to a few questions.

1. The mask workshop is not mandatory. If you can not make it, you can't make it, please just let me know!

2. REHEARSALS: Not everyone is called to every rehearsal.

  • Every Sunday night I will post a specific rehearsal schedule for that week. This same schedule will be put up outside the main office in school on Monday morning.
  • SPORTS --> those who are involved in a sport have (hopefully) already let me know, and I will do my best not to schedule those kids during basketball games etc. However, I can not promise that things won't overlap from time to time.
  • Munchkins/Winkies/Soldiers - I will work out who will be in each of the scenes where it says "Some Munchkins" and the like, so that everyone is in more than once scene. I will notify everyone once I have done this.
  • Christmas Vacation ... I have been notified that some students are going away for the Holiday and will not be able to attend some rehearsals. Thank you. If you are going away and haven't yet let me know, please do so soon, so I can schedule rehearsals accordingly.

***If you have not yet handed in your Parent/Student Contract, please bring it in on Monday the 30th of November - if you're not called to rehearsal that afternoon you may leave it in the Main Office and I will collect it.

Thanks.

More soon! Happy Thanksgiving!!!

Greenville Middle School Play Rules

1) COMMITMENT! Don't take on this show if you can't see it through to the end - the production weekend.

2) KEEP UP GOOD GRADES! Your first responsibility is to be a good student; so don't fall behind in your studies.

3) REGULARLY check the GMS Play Bulletin Board (in the Main Office) to note when YOU are called for rehearsal, and come only when you are scheduled. *3 Un-excused absences and you can’t perform.

4) BE PROMPT & PREPARED - “Five minutes early is on time.” Arrive at rehearsals on time, and be prepared to work. *You should have your script, a pencil, your journal and the appropriate clothes/shoes for rehearsal every time.

5) PAY ATTENTION! Listen attentively and quietly. Learn your part. Remember we learn from one another and count on support from each other. Always be respectful and supportive of everyone involved.

6) Request permission to leave rehearsals for restroom, telephone, etc. We must know where you are at all times, so YOU MUST sign out, obtain a pass to leave rehearsals.

7) LIMIT FOOD OR DRINK during rehearsal. Water is the only thing allowed in the auditorium – in a sports/water bottle that is closeable!

8) BE PROFESSIONAL – Know your character. Know your lines. Know your blocking. Be respectful at all times. Be creative. Have fun!

9) BE CONSIDERATE – Pay close attention to ALL direction. If you have questions/comments please wait for an appropriate time ask, and the appropriate person to speak with.

10) Remember a play is not our reality and it is not “pretend,” it is a team effort to create “another reality” we want to share with an audience!
HAVE FUN HAVE FUN HAVE FUN!!!!!
